  • YSN CareerSOS: Can You Get College Credit for Each Internship You Do While In School?

by YSN - Your Success Network
    August 31st, 2009

    life-preserverHi,

My name is Gregory and I am a print journalism major at Delaware State University. I am approaching my last semester in school and I have not had an internship. My school requires that you do one internship to earn 3 credits.  I have already registered to do the internship this coming fall semester. However, what I most likely have to do is get an internship at a newspaper that is near my school. Many of the editors at the newspaper are friends with the mass communications teachers .  Unfortunately, this is not exactly what I wanted to do. I would much rather have an internship at a magazine, particularly in New York. I have applied to many of them and I never got a response back. I realize that this is my last semester and I need to take any internship I can get so I can be done by the end of the semester. However, during the spring, I would like to try to intern somewhere else until I graduate in the spring. My problem is that most internships require that you receive a credit. If I already had an internship and received a credit, will they still let me intern if a college credit is mandatory? How can a person do multiple  internships if most places require you to receive a college credit?

    1. Lauren Berger Says:

      Hey Gregory,

This is a great question! If you are interested in magazine writing, I encourage you to take the newspaper internship. They are both in the journalism world and often you need to start with experience before you can land certain internships. Each internship will be a building block to the next. You will have a much better chance of landing the Magazine internship for Spring if you participate in the newspaper internship this Fall.

As far as credit goes, I was able to get school credit for only 2 of my internships. I was able to get “transcript recognition” for my internships which meant that they showed up on my records but didn’t give me actual credit, and that was enough for the employers. I suggest speaking with your career center about what you can do to get some sort of recognition. With unpaid internships, the employer just wants to make sure that the student gets a beneficial experience and they aren’t working for free and getting nothing in return.

      Good luck!

      Best,
      Lauren Berger
